چکیده

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT We present a statistical model which shows the influence of turbulence on a thermonuclear flame propagating in C+O white dwarf matter. Based on a Monte Carlo description of turbulence, it provides a method for investigating the physics in the so-called distributed burning regime. Using this method we perform numerical simulations of turbulent flames and show that in this particular regime the flamelet model for the turbulent flame velocity loses its validity. In fact, at high turbulent intensities burning in the distributed regime can lead to a deceleration of the turbulent flame and thus induces a competing process to turbulent effects that cause a higher flame speed. It is also shown that in dense C+O matter turbulent heat transport is described adequately by the Peclet number, Pe, rather than by the Reynolds number, which means that flame propagation is decoupled from small-scale turbulence. Finally, at the onset of our results we argue that the available turbulent energy in an exploding C+O white dwarf is probably too low in order to make a deflagration to detonation transition possible. Ongoing searches for supernovae (SNe) at cosmological distances have recently started to provide a link between SN Ia statistics and galaxy evolution. In this talk I will use recent estimates of the global history of star formation to compute the theoretical Type Ia and Type II SN rates as a function of cosmic time. I will compare the predicted values with the rates observed in the range 0 ≤ z ...

We investigate the quantity and composition of unburned material in the outer layers of three normal Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia): 2000dn, 2002cr and 2004bw. Pristine matter from a white dwarf progenitor is expected to be a mixture of oxygen and carbon in approximately equal abundance. Using near-infrared (NIR, 0.7 − 2.5 µm) spectra, we find that oxygen is abundant while carbon is severely deple...

Type Ia supernovae, i.e. stellar explosions which do not have hydrogen in their spectra, but intermediate-mass elements such as silicon, calcium, cobalt, and iron, have recently received considerable attention because it appears that they can be used as “standard candles” to measure cosmic distances out to billions of light years away from us. Observations of type Ia supernovae seem to indicate...

We examine the possibility that supernovae type Ia (SN Ia) are produced by white dwarfs accreting from Roche-lobe filling evolved companions, under the assumption that a strong optically thick stellar wind from accretor is able to stabilize the mass transfer. We show that if a mass transfer phase on a thermal timescale precedes a nuclear burning driven phase, then such systems (of which the sup...
